Description

Distribution and cultivation

The origin of persimmon is east asia, specially, Sachon, Unnam, Jeolgang, Gangsosung in China.
About 190 kinds of persimmon genus plants have a worldwide distribution from the tropical to the temperate regions.
There are persimmon tree and Goyeom in the round and oval shape in Korea.
Persimmon is a edible fruit, but Goyeom is mostly used as a medicine and dye.
An astrigent persimmon grows throughout West coast at 39

latitude, inland areas at 37 to 38 latitude and the east coast at 40 latitude. The growth around the area at 8 to 10 degrees is controlled, so the cultivation area of north region is small but spreads out throughout the country gradually because of the global warming. A sweet persimmon cannot survive in cold climate, so usually cultivated in warm south area.
We do not know when our ancestors began to grow persimmons because of no record except a little in modern times.
There are some traces left in Korea about cultivating the persimmon: for example, Lee Yeop left a record in the Nongsajibyo under the reign of King Wonjong(r.1284~1351) in the period of Koryo.
In the period of Choson, under the reign of King Sungjong, Kang HeeMaeng wrote the use of persimmon in JungChu Ceremony in Gukjo-o-rye; in 1614, under the reign of Gwanghae, Lee Sugwang wrote Diospyros kaki, Jeonghyang mellow persimmon in Jibongyuseol; in 1660, under the reign of Hyunjong, there was a document written about the recipe for Diospyros lotus and making the dried persimmon. According to Seo MyungWoong in Gosasibejib (r.1715~1781), there is a recipe for persimmon vinegar and the mellow persimmon.
In addition, the division of a sweet persimmon and an astringent persimmon can be proved by the archieves made in Yeomchang period (r.1192~1333)
